Driving Question: "If you were to look into a crystal ball at the future of Centennial Elementary School 50 years from now, what would the school look like, inside and out?"
Sub Questions:
An effective driving question is provocative and engages the students. They are also open ended to allow students to consider many different aspects of the subject. Driving questions go to the heart of a discipline and to be able to answer the question the students must investigate in the specific area. They are challenging, they motivate the students to learn more about the subject and drive the research. A good driving question also can srise from real world dilemmas that students find interesting, this makes the project more real to the students and they might even be able to make an impact on their surrounding areas. Lastly, driving questions are consistent with curricular standards and frameworks, they go right along with what you should be doing in the classroom, but also provide a fun and exciting way for the students to learn the information.
Unit of Study
I feel that an entire unit could be created around my driving question because there are so many different options for us to look at. Not only are we looking ahead in the future, but we have to be creative and use critical thinking to be able to do this. The students will be creating models of what the school could look like. They will be researching different types of emerging technology for the school and how it will relate to learning. Student will be introduced to many new areas of study that they may not have experienced before. Lastly, the driving question is very open ended and will allow the students to go in any direction they want with it.
